Grace makes you work!

Human life oscillates between two very different kinds of days. Some days feel heavy, slow, and unproductive. Other days feel purposeful, energised, and full of clarity. Scripture teaches us that the difference is not simply discipline or personality — it is grace.
Everyone knows days like these:
Sleeping late
Stuck on the computer
Craving junk food
Watching endless TV dramas
Feeling low and trying to comfort yourself with chocolate
Playing games to escape
A messy home and no inspiration
Cola, coffee, and restlessness
Mental fog, physical tiredness, family stress
These days feel like drifting. Nothing grows. Nothing moves. You feel disconnected from purpose.
Then there are days that feel completely different:
Waking early after a good rest
A vision for healthy living
Working eight focused hours
Fresh air and exercise
Sharing meals and community
Reading a good book
Calling someone to encourage them
This is what happens when grace is alive in us. As Paul writes:
By the grace of God I am what I am… I worked harder than all of them — yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. (1 Corinthians 15:10–11)
Grace does not make us passive. Grace empowers. When grace awakens, transformation begins immediately.
From the very beginning, God created humanity with a purpose:
Let us make mankind in our image… so that they may rule… (Genesis 1:26–31)
God placed Adam in the garden:
To cultivate (promote growth)
To maintain (preserve from decline)
To subdue (exercise discipline)
To rule (take responsibility and make decisions)
Work is not a curse. Work is part of God’s image in us. Even a retired person still “works” — just differently. We are not created to sit still, without routines or purpose. We are created to build, create, steward, and bless.
There is no blessing without responsibility. God invites us to lead in our families, churches, workplaces, and relationships.
The Reformers understood that every job is a ministry. There is no divide between “secular work” and “spiritual work.” Whether preaching, cleaning, delivering mail, baking bread, or repairing pipes, all work can be done unto the Lord.
Paul writes:
Whatever you do, do it wholeheartedly, as for the Lord and not for people. (Colossians 3:23–24)
Your attitude shapes your experience. A wise story illustrates this:
A new employee asked a colleague, “How is it working here?” The colleague replied, “How was it at your last job?” The new employee said, “Terrible.” The colleague answered, “Then you’ll probably find it similar here.”
If we do not change our attitude, our environment will not change either.
When grace is active, work becomes:
Stress-free, not pressured
Joyful, not burdensome
Purposeful, not meaningless
Positive, not cynical
Unified, not divided into “important” and “unimportant” tasks
Grace makes us curious, willing to learn, and patient with the process. A 10-year-old can do something; a 20-year-old can do more. Growth never stops.
Grace also produces generosity:
Let the thief steal no more, but work… so that he may have something to share with those in need. (Ephesians 4:28)
Work becomes a way to bless others.
Paul warns the church not to drift from the simple devotion to Christ:
I fear that your minds may be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ. (2 Corinthians 11:3)
Grace keeps us grounded — not fearful of society, not obsessed with the Antichrist, not overwhelmed by the world’s decay. Instead, grace calls us to:
Build families
Raise children
Pursue education
Learn languages
Grow social and practical skills
Serve faithfully
Stay rooted in the gospel
We are “super-glued” to Christ, not stuck in the mud of fear.
God creates, opens doors, gives responsibility, and promises to walk with us. Even if you are not in your dream job, you can serve with joy today — call someone, send a message, help a neighbour, study diligently, or simply do your work wholeheartedly.
Grace transforms ordinary days into meaningful ones. Grace turns Day 1 into Day 2. Grace makes us more like Christ.
