Why gospel-centred preaching matters more than ever

A good sermon is like good food. It nourishes, strengthens, and revives the soul. When preaching is filled with the grace of Jesus, it brings life, hope, and freedom. But when preaching becomes performance-based or moralistic, it can unintentionally burden people rather than lift them.
Many believers grow up with a performance mindset — “Do more, try harder, be better.” But the gospel invites us into a grace-based life where transformation flows from what Jesus has already done, not from what we manage to achieve.
This is why gospel-centred preaching matters so deeply. It reminds us:
Jesus is a person, not a concept
The cross is a finished work
God’s heart toward us is love, not condemnation
The Holy Spirit changes us from the inside out
A church that consistently hears the gospel becomes a church filled with joy, unity, and spiritual growth. Let’s never underestimate the power of good preaching in our local church. It shapes hearts, renews minds, and builds a community rooted in grace.
One of the greatest keys to preaching with clarity is understanding the difference between the Old and New Covenants. Both are in the Bible, but they do not function the same way.
The Old Covenant points forward — through shadows, promises, and pictures — to Jesus. The Gospels show the atonement taking place. Acts shows how the gospel is lived out. The Epistles explain what the gospel means for us today.
When we mix the covenants, confusion follows. When we preach the Old Covenant as a rulebook for Christians, we unintentionally place people under condemnation. But when we preach it as a picture of Christ fulfilled in the New Covenant, it becomes a treasure chest of revelation.
The whole Bible points to Jesus. If we don’t yet see Him clearly in a passage, it’s better to wait than to preach confusion.
Our calling is simple:
Be a channel through which the New Covenant becomes alive in people’s hearts.
